Sailor Freddy entertains the guests at "Uncle Max's" with songs on the guitar. This earns him more than just a few tips. The waitress Susi falls in love with the honest guy with the strong voice. Journalist Katja, who is strolling through St. Pauli with her fiancé, also notices the singing sailor. They don't know that Freddy is wanted by the police and that his longing for faraway places won't let him go.

Two dangerous criminals, Bachman and Willi, want to leave their hometown of Berlin as quickly as possible after a botched robbery. On the way to the airport, however, they lose one of their pistol magazines in Freddy’s taxi. Now they not only want to get rid of Freddy, who finds the magazine, but also decide to rob Freddy’s good friend and colleague Paul along the way. Freddy is still unaware of all this and goes to a party with his girlfriend, the flower seller Ilse. Even when an attempt on his life goes wrong, Freddy still has no idea of the danger he’s in. It’s only when he hears about the attack on Paul on the radio that the truth dawns on him. Now he’s determined to track down the perpetrators, if only to avenge the crime against his friend...
